Hillsboro, OR. — Mayor Beach Pace and Police Chief Jim Coleman released a joint message addressing an increase in federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Hillsboro. Mayor Pace emphasized that Hillsboro remains a sanctuary city, committed to inclusivity and safety for all residents, regardless of immigration status.
“Our City Council is united around our commitment to fostering a welcoming and thriving environment for all,” said Pace. “You have rights — and we want you to know your rights.”
The city is directing residents to local resources, including SOAR Immigration Legal Services and the Portland Immigration Rights Coalition (PIRC), for legal support and information. Pace urged residents who witness ICE detentions to record safely, report to immigrant rights organizations, and contact trusted individuals for those detained.

Chief Coleman reiterated that the Hillsboro Police Department does not coordinate with ICE or enforce immigration laws, focusing instead on local public safety. “We respectfully ask that you not endanger yourself or others, or break any local, state, or federal laws, because we care about you,” he said. Coleman added that HPD officers are easily identifiable and encouraged residents to request credentials if unsure.
Both leaders stressed that while ICE agents operate under federal authority, residents must avoid interfering with their actions to ensure safety. “We are sharing this message because we care about you and we want you to be safe,” the joint statement concluded.
